Frequently Asked Questions
How much does stainless steel cost today?
Metal prices rise and fall alongside many external factors. Among others, the prices of both Nickel and Molybdenum metals influence the price of stainless tell, with both being used often as part of the alloy. Also, the exchange rate between AUD and USD plays a factor in Australian metal trading. Find the daily prices for these at the top of the page.
Where can stainless steel be used?
Stainless steel is extremely versatile, making it perfect for use in industries such as construction, transportation, culinary industries and medicinal purposes. Whatever it is you’re planning for your stainless steel, Midway Metals can help make it happen.
What grade of stainless steel do I need?
Depending on your final application, you may be wondering about the grade of stainless steel you will need. Essentially steel grades are used to distinguish between steel with differing compositions and physical properties to one another. There are over 150 different grades, so contact Midway Metals for more information about which is right for you.
Do you supply welding products for stainless steel jobs?
When it comes to welding, choosing the right welding products for your stainless steel job is just as important as the technique. We are proud distributors of Voestalpine Bohler Welding products, a leader in the welding industry with over 100 years of experience.
Which finishing chemicals or pickling products for stainless steel jobs do you offer?
Renowned within the industry for superior products, Midway Metals are proud distributors of Avesta Finishing Chemicals. We offer a wide range of stainless steel finishing chemicals to meet all your needs.
What Are the Different Types of Stainless Steel?
Although there are countless varieties of stainless steel, most of them will fall into one of three basic categories. You could get austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, or martensitic stainless steel.
Austenitic stainless steels are the most popular form of stainless steel. Products from them are more corrosion-resistant since they contain a significant amount of chromium, and nickel. A cold-forming procedure can make them magnetic, although they often aren’t.
Ferritic stainless steels are magnetic and are valued for their resistance to stress corrosion cracking and temperature oxidation. As a result of their lower nickel content, they often cost less than other types.
Martensitic stainless steels are structurally similar to ferritic stainless steels. They contain a higher carbon content, though. They are frequently mixed with a protective polymer coating to increase corrosion resistance. They can be hardened to a great extent.
What Are the Properties of Stainless Steel?
Stainless steels have high tensile strength and are very durable. They are temperature and corrosion-resistant. They are also attractive, low-maintenance, and recyclable.
Can Stainless Steel Rust or Corrode?
Yes. Even though stainless steel contains chromium, which reacts with oxygen in the air to generate a protective layer that greatly reduces corrosion and rust, it can still rust under specific circumstances.
Stainless steel corrodes when exposed to harsh chemicals, salt, grease, moisture, or heat over an extended period.
How Often Should Maintenance Be Carried Out on Stainless Steel?
The cleaning frequency varies depending on the application. Iit can be anywhere between once and four times each year, or it could be once every day for something used in sanitary environments.
However, the preferred cleaning schedule in many applications would be that it is cleaned according to the application and environment.
Regular cleaning can reduce expenses and the chance of damaging stainless steel.
Where Is Stainless Steel Manufactured?
Stainless steel is manufactured in many countries around the world. With the help of our cutting-edge technology and facilities here at Midway Metals in Australia, we can process stainless steel for proper application.
Examples include our Blanking Line machine, which offers unmatched levelling and is perfect for flat, smooth stainless steel sheeting.
